Love your photos on line - wish I could see the exhibition in person. The 'ghosts' in some of the pictures are intriguing and unless there is
something printed to indicate at least the local language it's impossible to tell which country is represented. People read, slump, stare. Not even clothing defines the place. Subways to the average consumer are interchangeable like so many other commodities.

Riding the Tokyo subway in 1959 at rush hour was a very scary experience. There were 'pushers' (my term) shoving people into the cars so the doors would close. Then fear of being trampled in the exodus was palpable. Is it still like that and does this occur anywhere else? –Anne

My girlfriend was visiting friends in NY in the late eighties. When she went out for the day on her own they advised her to get home before dark, it was not a neighbourhood she should be walking in by herself. Unfortunately she ended up out late and on the last subway home. Being her first trip to NY she lost track of where she was headed and got off one stop too early. As she stepped on to the platform a very large and scary looking man followed her.The doors closed and the train took off leaving her alone with this person on the platform. There was no other train to wait for so she head out up the subway stairs and a more populated surroundings.The man followed her, staying close. When she reached the street he approached her and asked where she was going. For some reason she told him. He said fine, I'll come with with you. Without talking any more he walked her the ten blocks to the apartment building her friends lived in. As they reached the front door he turned and looked at her , saying 'God was with you tonight' and then walked away. – John
